  • Retrospective Payment of Social Security Contributions for a Period of Employment in Libya

    This scheme is intended for Maltese residents or persons insured for Maltese Social Security purposes, whereby eligible applicants can pay back-dated Social Security Contributions which are missing from their respective contribution history. Such missing contributions should be during a period/s of employment in Libya between 1990 and 2018. The scope of this scheme is to enable applicants either qualify for a contributory pension, or else enhance its current or potential payment rate.
  • Senior Citizen Grant

    The Senior Citizen Grant is awarded to those persons who are 75 years or older

    • still living in their own home or with relatives
    • living in a private residential home
  • Severe Disability Assistance

    A Severe Disability Assistance may be awarded to a person with a physical disability who is 16 years of age and over that can be engaged in a gainful occupation.
  • Severe Intellectual Disability Assistance

    A Severe Intellectual Disability Assistance may be awarded to a person with a mental and general learning disability who is 16 years of age and over that can be engaged in a gainful occupation.
  • Sickness Assistance

    A person becomes entitled to Sickness Assistance if s/he proves to the satisfaction of the Director of Social Security that s/he or any member of his/her household is suffering from a disease that could only be cured or alleviated by a special diet or regimen, which incurs an exceptional expenditure. Vide list.
  • Sickness Benefit

    For Sickness Benefit to be awarded, a person must not have reached the retirement age and a Medical Certificate must be completed by a medical practitioner. The Medical Certificate must be sent or delivered to the Department of Social Security within 10 days (the only exceptions accepted are due to hospitalisation or treatment abroad) from the 1st day of sickness. In turn, the copy of the Medical Certificate must be handed to the employer. If the sickness is longer than 14 days, the Medical Certificate must be renewed every 2 weeks, until the employee is fit to resume work.

    • A person is no longer required to submit the blue Medical Certificate to the Department of Social Security if the period of illness is 3 days or less
    • Certification of illness of 3 days or less does not constitute a claim for Sickness Benefit but the copy of the certificate must be handed to the employer, if the Kopja għall-Prinċipal is demanded
    • A First and Final Certificate or Closed First certifies that the insured person is unfit for work for a specified period of days, but not exceeding 14 days
    • A First Certificate or Open First certifies that the insured person has been medically examined for the first time, within a period of sickness, and will be unfit for more than 14 days
    • An Intermediate Certificate certifies that the insured person is still incapable to attend work for a period not exceeding 14 days from the examination date on the Medical Certificate
    • A Final Certificate certifies that the insured person may resume work on the date specified (return to work date) for a period not exceeding 14 days from the examination date on the Medical Certificate
    • A person who suffers from Fibromyalgia or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) will be paid sickness benefit from the first day of illness on the second request of illness of the same year
    • A person undergoing therapy for cancer will be paid sickness benefit from the first day of illness on the second request of illness of the same year
    • Parents with breaks in employment due to children undergoing treatment for rare diseases, may be eligible to contribution credits for a maximum period of 8 years
  • Single Unmarried Parent Allowance

    The Single Unmarried Parent Allowance may be awarded to a single unmarried parent who is not engaged in a gainful occupation.
  • Social Assistance

    A Social Assistance may be awarded to a Head of Household who may:

    • be incapable of working due to medical reasons; or
    • cannot engage in employment due to having care and custody of children, and is legally or de facto separated; or
    • be married, in a civil union; cohabiting or caring for the spouse who may be critically ill. In this case the application is subject to approval by a Medical Board, appointed in accordance to the Social Security Act (Cap. 318).
  • Social Security Contributions Postings Record Sheet

    Through this service you can view your Social Security Contributions postings record sheet. Social Security Contributions for the previous year will be displayed in December of the following year. For each year found the display shows categorised Class 1 Social Security Contributions and Credits which refer to employed persons, together with Class 2 / Class 3 Social Security Contributions and Credits which refer to self-occupied / self-employed persons.
  • Social Work – Active Ageing and Community Care

    The aim of the Social Work service is to provide emotional support, guidance and assistance to senior citizens. This service deals with social casework, provides advocacy for clients, facilitates self-help management and develops action plans, performs crisis intervention work, provides assessments for Home Help Service and liaises with the geriatric and general rehabilitation hospitals.

    This service also deals with reports on senior citizens having acute conditions who are residing in residential homes. The Social Work Unit which manages this service also assess social cases and deals with them accordingly. This Unit also liaises with the Health Department, the police, local councils, parish priests and other community organisations.
