Overview

In order to encourage the use of bicycles and pedelecs (electric bicycles) as a means of transport that reduce both pollution and traffic and at the same time encourage physical activity, the Minister for Finance has launched this scheme whereby a grant of 15.25% on the purchase price of bicycles and pedelecs is granted to eligible operators of Bike Hire businesses.

What you'll get

Applicants will get 15.25% of the expense, up to a maximum of €85 for each bicycle and up to €250 for each pedelec (electric bicycle) bought for the purpose of hire. A maximum total amount of €7500 will be given to each applicant.

Eligibility

Applicants should be VAT-registered Maltese residents and the application form should reach the VAT Department by not later than 3 months from the date of purchase. The original fiscal receipts/invoices and relevant documentation shall be kept by the applicant for a period of not less than 2 years from the date of application, and produced upon request to the Commissioner for Taxes and Customs for verification purposes. The grant payment will be deposited in the bank account indicated on the application form.

Documents Required

The details of the invoices/fiscal receipts and any further documentation required. In the case of a bicycle or pedelec bicycle not purchased from Malta the original invoice issued by the supplier indicating the type of bicycle or pedelec bicycle purchased, together with the delivery note, the original documentary proof that final payment has been affected, and clearance from Maltapost/Department of Customs Malta as may be required.
