Overview

Application to obtain a Certificate of Competency to serve on board the following commercial vessels operating within ports, internal, and territorial waters of Malta:
i) Boatman – Dual qualification to act as master and/or engineer of vessels less than 10 metres capable of carrying 12 passengers or less.
ii) Boatmaster Grade 2 – Dual qualification to act as master and/or engineer of vessels less than 12 metres in length and with engines up to 250 kW.
iii) Boatmaster Grade 1 – Master of vessels less than 24 metres in length.
iv) Mate – Bridge Watchkeeper and Deputy Master.
v) Master – Master of vessels of 24 metres in length and over.
vi) Engine Driver Grade 3 – Engineer of vessels with propulsion machinery of maximum continuous power of less than 500 kW.
vii) Engine Driver Grade 2 – Engineer of vessels with propulsion machinery of maximum continuous power of less than 750 kW.
viii) Engine Driver Grade 1 – Engineer of vessels with propulsion machinery of maximum continuous power of less than 1500 kW.
ix) Engineer – Chief Engineer of vessels with propulsion machinery of continuous power of 1500 kW and over. Individuals wanting to revalidate their Certificate of Competency.

What you'll get

The notice of eligiblity entitles the holder to apply and obtain a Certificate of Competency in order to be eligible to serve on board commercial vessels operating within ports, internal, and territorial waters of Malta.

Eligibility

Persons intending to apply for the Certificate of Competency need to have reached the minimum age applicable. In addition they need to have obtained the required seagoing experience and passed the medical fitness test. The minimum ages for the various personnel grades are:

- 16 years for General Purpose hand.
- 18 years for Boatman, Boatmaster Grade 2 and Engine Driver grades 2 and 3.
- 19 years for Boatmaster Grade 1 and Engine Driver Grade 1.
- 20 years for Mate/Master Restricted and Engineer.
- 22 years for Master.

Print and fill in the form and send to:

Together with:
i) Copy of Identity card or passport.
ii) Evidence of appropriate qualifying service (Engineering Personnel - PYD 236 and or Deck Personnel - PYD 209).
iii) Valid Medical Fitness Certificate (PYD 212).
iv) Two coloured recent passport size photos.
v) Copies of prerequisite qualifications as listed in the training and certification guidelines issued as per Commercial Vessel Regulation LN 499.23.
vi) A fee of €58.23 payable upon collection of relative Certificate of Competence.
