Overview
This application is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Social Work Profession Act (Cap. 468.). It is intended for individuals seeking to obtain a warrant to practise as a Registered Social Worker in Malta.
The application process enables the Social Work Profession Board to assess whether applicants meet the required legal and professional standards. These include recognised qualifications, adherence to ethical standards, and demonstrated competence to practise. A warrant may be granted either:
after practising in Malta as a social worker for a period of two years; or
through the recognition of a Social Work Warrant obtained in another European country.
The granting of a warrant authorises the applicant to practise social work legally in Malta, subject to ongoing compliance with the Act, subsidiary legislation, and any applicable policies, including Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
What you'll get
Successful applicants will receive official communication from the Social Work Profession Board confirming approval of their application, together with their assigned Warrant Number. This number will serve as the social worker’s professional registration identifier.
The approval letter will also specify:
the date of the first warrant renewal; and
the number of CPD points required to be completed by that date.
Following the first renewal, the warrant must be renewed every two years in accordance with the Continuing Professional Development policy.
If an application is unsuccessful, the Board will inform the applicant accordingly. This may involve:
an invitation to attend a meeting to discuss any issues identified; or
a formal notice of rejection.
Applicants whose submissions are unsuccessful may contact the Board to request further clarification regarding the decision.
Eligibility
Persons may qualify for the issue of a warrant on the basis that such person:
is a Maltese citizen, or is otherwise permitted to work in Malta under any law; and
is of good conduct; and
has his name entered in the register of registered Social Workers; and
is in possession of the Honours Degree in Social Work conferred by the University of Malta, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology or of another academic qualification as the Board may deem equivalent; and
satisfies the Board that he has received adequate experience in the practice of the profession of social work for an aggregate period of at least two (2) years fulltime, or its equivalent in part-time, following the completion of such degree or such other professional qualification under the supervision of a registered social worker.” (Social Work Profession Act, 2003, Article 3(3)); and
has applied for the warrant within ninety (90) days of having received the adequate professional experience in accordance with the paragraph just above; and
satisfies the Board that there has not been any professional misconduct, gross negligence, incompetence or is in breach of the code of ethics established under this Act.
Documentation required
The MQRIC certificate confiming the attainment of an academic qualification in Social Work awarded from a recognised institution of Level 6 or higher.
A transcript of the academic qualification.
A certificate of completion of the academic qualification.
Documentation attesting to the practice of the Social Work profession.
Documentation attesting to the supervision from a Registered/Warranted Social Worker.
A valid Police conduct Certificate.
The copies of the original documents submitted with the application are to be dated and signed off by a professional, stating on documents that these are a true copy of the original documents.
Any foreign documentation presented, needs to be translated in English by an accredited translator.
